1876-The idea of cathode rays was established by Eugen Goldstein, which would later be used to invent the first television.
1877- George Carey drafted the first actual “idea” of the television. He hoped that it would permit the public to “see by electricity.”
1920- Philo Farnsworth experimented with the image dissector.
-Vladimir Zworkin discovered the iconoscope.
1927-Bell laboratories aired the first transmission of both picture and sound. Herbert Hoover commented on the subject:
“Today we have, in a sense, the transmission of sight for the first time in the world’s history. Human genius has now destroyed the impediment of distance in a new respect, and in a manner hitherto unknown.”
1930- Charles Jenkins aired the first TV commercial in history.
1948- News programs began airing on a regular basis.
-Cable television was discovered.
1952- Seventy channels were available on the television.
1967- A majority of television shows were brodcasted in color, rather than black and white.
1970- Fiber optic cable's were discovered which helped deliver television to homes.
1978- PBS brodcasted via satellite vs landlines. This was a first for any brodcasting company.
1980- High definition TV's were starting to be produced. These consisted of 1,125 lines in comparison to the first TV made which produced 30 to 60 lines.
1994- 99% of the US population owned a TV.
1997-A television rating system develops.
2000- 90% of households possess a VCR player.
2003-Cable television invents a system where live TV can be recorded and stored for future viewing.
2004- There are more than 300 cable networks.
